Each week Miss Walberg has set the students a different creative baking based objective; initially inspired by the return of The Great British Bake Off. Launch week saw the students learning how to use fondant to create cake toppers, the theme being Rabbits. With plenty of concentration, and some spatula carving skills, our budding bakers produced some interesting creations with most resembling the rabbits as intended.
Our boarders have very much enjoyed their Wednesday baking group, each growing in confidence and ability developing their skills along the way. Miss Walberg has witnessed incredible concentration and creativity as the weeks have progressed and has been very impressed by the effort, determination and willingness to learn that has been demonstrated each week.
The commitment shown by the students has enabled them to progress onto learning more advanced techniques, progressing from 2D to 3D fondant shapes, then onto more free form ideas for designs with multiple colours. This adapting and improvement in what is initially a fun activity shows the progression our teaching staff encourage in all aspects of their time with our students; their progression is in part a credit to Miss Walberg and her engagement with the activity.
Our final baking session of the term continued the incorporated excitement of the Christmas period, challenging our students to create their own festively themed cupcakes to take home for Christmas. Employing all the techniques they had learnt over the past weeks, all our students were able to demonstrate a far more complex understanding of the task producing neat detailed cupcakes any baker would be incredibly proud of! As you can see from the above pictures, the learning and progression across the weeks is easy to see with our students producing ‘cupcakes’ fitting of a show stopper challenge!
Boarders Bake Off has been a great success this term and Christmas seems a fitting finale at the end of the term. We are very much looking forward to seeing what activities our staff come up with next; and more importantly seeing our students learn and improve as they learn more additional fun and functional skills. Who knows we may even return for a ‘season two’ of Boarders Bake Off!
