Football Academy at Moorland

An Opportunity Like No Other

Moorland School and the Moorland Football Academy offer our students a truly unique package combining a first-class education with unrivalled football coaching of the highest level, whilst providing a platform for students to be exposed to professional club academy scouts on a regular basis.

Our Head of Football Development, Charlie Jackson, is a Manchester City Development Coach.  Charlie has previously worked at Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers FC, as well as coaching at Ajax FC in Holland by invitation.  He has also been involved with the Scottish FA performing the role of Development Coach. Moorland School is also the home of the East Lancashire Training Academy & Development Centre for Manchester City FC.

The Moorland Football Academy School has remarkable global partners and enjoys the benefits of a special relationship with Blackburn Rovers FC.  We are official partners of Blackburn Rovers, as well as being their education partners.  At present, we have 10 signed Blackburn Rovers Category 1 Academy players, as well as players signed to Manchester City, Manchester United, Preston North End, Blackpool, Burnley and Accrington Stanley.  This achievement is even more remarkable as Moorland School currently has less than 100 boys within our Senior School cohort.

Accolades for our Academy teams are impressive and numerous.  Moorland has long had a reputation for upsetting the odds and winning national football competitions such as the ESFA and ISFA Cups, as well as claiming regional titles.

Coach Jackson’s philosophy is based on quick-passing, technical ability and possession-based football, which has been evident throughout Moorland’s remarkable journeys to both regional and national finals over the years.  Furthermore, it is this approach that is so intrinsic in producing young players that can go on and hold their own within Category 1 Academies and to later be signed professionally.

With over 16 years of history of unparalleled success and true expertise, the Moorland Football Academy brings first class football experiences to children aged from 5 to 19, training to develop their talents in the game they love.

Along with the pre-16 courses we run, we also offer the new and innovative BTEC Level 3 in Sport course.  The BTEC course is delivered by UEFA licensed coaches and is run in conjunction with Blackburn Rovers Football Club.  The BTEC squad act as the BRFC Official Shadow Squad, and train at Blackburn Rovers Category 1 facilities, as well as at our own impressive training facilities on-site.

Our aim has always been to embed the correct techniques right from the outset, encouraging young footballers to play and develop naturally.  We believe football should be fun, although for those aspiring to become professional footballers, our experience, reputation and contacts at the highest level means we offer genuine through-routes and pathways for those exceptionally talented players. Our reputation for having young players sign for professional academies and clubs is without equal.

Our expertise and experience of dovetailing the highest level of football coaching with academic progress and success, sets us apart from the competition.

The Moorland Football Academy School offers clear and unique pathways to making sure all our students reach their footballing potential.

The Moorland Football Academy offers a truly inspirational programme that combines first-class football development with educational opportunities.  We take our responsibility to educate extremely seriously and is why the programme is the culmination of years of carefully developed coaching methods which focus upon unequalled delivery, mentoring and social development techniques to help produce the best football talent.

This philosophy sits seamlessly within the main academic curriculum to ensure that Moorland produces top footballing talent as well as excellent GCSE and A-Level results.  The School has married its 80-year history of academic excellence with modern and innovative football development coaching.

We use the intensity of the football programme to motivate our young learners to achieve their potential, both inside and outside of the classroom.  In layman’s terms, if students are not working hard in class or meeting their targets academically, the football programme is shortened for them.  The latter acts as a ‘stick and carrot’ approach for all our learners.  In essence, the students dictate how much exposure to the football programme they receive each term via their attitude, application and behaviour.

Every student at the Moorland Football Academy has access to our fantastic range of facilities.  These facilities include a brand-new training pitch here at Moorland School, to sit alongside our indoor 4G training base.  Both the training pitch and the indoor facility are used daily by our students as they develop their games with our renowned coaches.

Having an indoor 4G facility is an integral part of the setup here at Moorland, and ensures our footballers can train day or night, in good weather and bad.  The new training pitch has been laid with the latest grass turf, to allow the players to develop their touch and technique.

Moorland students also have access to the first-class facilities at Brockhall, home to the Blackburn Rovers Academy and one of only 24 Category 1 status Academies in the country. For a school to have almost daily access to such a facility, only 10 minutes away is quite unique.

For those students who have to board, we provide accommodation on-site with full-boarding services and care.  Our boarding accommodation is safe, secure, and spacious and provides a genuine ‘home from home’ feel and atmosphere.

The dorms are designed to provide the necessary space and homely feel for every student.  The boarding houses are part of the Moorland campus and are handily situated as they are only a 5-minute walk into Clitheroe and Clitheroe’s train station (which serves Manchester directly hourly).

As a full boarding student, all boarders receive 4 nutritious meals per day, 7 days per week.  The meals are cooked fresh on-site each day by our qualified team of chefs.  The catering team meets regularly with our coaching and teaching team, to provide nutritious meals to our students in terms of providing the right fuel both physically and mentally.  Fresh fruit and water are always available upon request.
