They took part in a variety of lessons and activities to give them a taste of what next year will bring.
As part of this, Dr.Bootle organised a fantastic series of science lessons that centred around forensics, scientific evaluations, experiments, lateral thinking and a whole lot of fun!
‘A Body in the Laboratory’ allowed to the children to experience all aspects of science we offer here at Moorland including Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The following is the schedule of the week:
A body has been found in the grounds of Moorland. The students had to use their powers of deduction and scientific knowledge to solve the case!
Lesson 1 – Biology
Students took their own finger prints and identified patterns, and then compared prints found at the crime scene with those of the three suspects.
Next they looked at DNA sequences from the suspects and compared it with a strand of hair found at the scene.
Lesson 2 – Chemistry
The detective in charge of the investigation found a threatening note. Students compared the chromatography traces of pens belonging to the suspects with the ink on the written note.
Lesson 3 – Physics
Students compared GPS tracking data from the suspect’s mobile phones to the known locations of getaway vehicle.
And finally…
Having looked at all the forensic evidence accumulated throughout the week, students were able to identify the murderer and build a case against them to present to the judge.
When asked about the week, Dr.Bootle said, “We all had a fantastic week in the lab. It’s fantastic to see the children getting excited about science and the possibilities the lessons may hold for next year. Enthusiasm for the subject is the first step. We seem to have a few great forensic investigators on our hands!’
